MODERN Victorian FAMILY HOME
Project Summary
We love a creative challenge here at KMID—and there’s nothing quite like designing for a couple with differing styles! The client, a young Somerville, MA, family with a new baby, wanted to marry her love for the traditional and his affinity for mid-century modern while preserving their Victorian home’s charming character.
“We’re creating their personal vibe as a couple, which means blending two tastes into one sensibility,” Kate explains of this interior design project. “The layers of furnishings, finishes, and fixtures we use tell the story of the family who lives here.”
Using the historical architecture as the backdrop, we accented original features with vintage wallcoverings. We then balanced this traditional sensibility with some modern accents via the use of color, material selection, art, unique lighting, and interesting furniture silhouettes.
Finally came the kitchen, which sets the tone as the heart of the home. So many design and decor elements bridge the gap between the couple’s tastes, from the slate blue cabinetry to the eye-catching pendants handblown using traditional techniques.
From mornings spent at the breakfast bar to dinner parties in the bright and welcoming dining room, the family has many opportunities to make memories.
