Tudor Style Paper Trail

WINCESTER, MA

To enter this Winchester Tudor-style home is to enter one family’s world of color and whimsy. One glance at the wallcoverings throughout, and you’ll understand the inspiration behind the project name!

The clients, an active family of five, are always on the go with travel and kids' sports. Not to mention, the home is always bustling—Dad is one of seven, which means a constant flow of cousins, aunts, uncles, and friends.

Although the couple is stylish and creative, they needed a partner for this full home renovation. After all, Mom explains, “We’re here for good, so we felt like this was our chance to do all of our favorite things in one space.” They sought our help to inject color, pattern, and life into their traditional 1920s home without overdoing it.

Our approach? Let the structure and architecture drive the interior design and decor while infusing the home with the family’s style!

KMID stepped in due to the homeowners’ unsuccessful partnership with a builder. We helped schedule and coordinate the subcontractors, ensuring they were clear on the intended design direction and had everything they needed to execute the vision.

We adapt to each client’s communication style. Everyone means something different when they say “bold” or “calming,” so we must hone in on their feelings and interpretations of these words. In this family’s case, we used wallpaper to communicate design intent in each space, rolling one scheme into the next from room to room. We helped the client curate a collection of prints and place them strategically, creating a cohesive look and feel throughout the home.

We partnered with architects Charles Myer & Partners to open up spaces like the kitchen, mudroom, and bedrooms, providing a more functional layout. We then incorporated rich jewel tones, patterns, and playful details while honoring the home’s original craftsmanship by maintaining original wood paneling and stained-glass windows.

Here, you’ll find drama, but not overwhelm. Sleek furniture, vibrant textiles, and chic tilework excite you to see what the next room has in store. There are plenty of show-stopping moments, like the floral-papered ceiling in the primary bedroom and the theater stage-inspired bed in the youngest son’s room.

There is no shortage of imagination in this timeless Tudor, which the family can continue making their own for years to come.
